Book Report

I'm a sucker for buying old books on eBay, especially ones on arts and crafts. I got this little beauty a couple of days ago.

It's full of wonderful instructions of things to make with paper. That's the good news. The bad news was that most of the color prints in the back of the book had been torn out. What good is an art book with no pictures? Not to be daunted I tried to see if I could figure out how to do some of the techniques just from the directions. This is what I have so far. It's been fun to puzzle out the process.

When was the last time you learned something new? What was it? I did this print with a little paper stencil. The book really emphasized the space between the motifs.

Wishing you the right amount of space. :-)

  1. My first project in screen printing class was to create a stencil. What tedious work! We cut it out of shelving paper, removed the paper, and applied it like a sticker to the underside of the screen. Then, we screen printed! The results were good, but unfortunately the stencil can only be used once.

  2. Aileen, so just one tee-shirt or just one printing?

  3. I had a friend who passed a few years back. She was a RISD student in the 60's, and a talented calligrapher. One of the things she taught me, was how important the "white spaces" are in any art. I have carried this lesson with me for years. I wonder, did she read this book?

  4. I love the look of your new blog! I've been using Wordpress myself for a couple of years now and am very happy with it.

    The stencil printing is lovely!

  5. Found a link to the book on Google...it appears to be the entire book, so perhaps your missing pages could be found there?

  8. I have printed some of your Toymaker items occasionally. Sent a paper basket to our Compassion child, since we can only send flat things like coloring pages or photos. She wrote back that the 'lovely picture on that bascat picture is so beautiful.'
    Thanks!
